Question

Is the following Hadith authentic?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“In the month of Dhul Qa’da there will be fighting and breaching of agreements between the tribes due to which Hajis [pilgrims] will be looted and there will be war in Mina. There will be a general massacre and a great deal of bloodshed, so much so that blood will be flowing even at the large Jamarah. It will come to a point that even the people of the Haram (including the Mahdi) will run and will come to the spot between the Rukn and Maqam Ibrahim and he will be pledged allegiance to, even though he [Mahdi] will dislike having the oath taken on him. It will be said to him that if you refuse to have the oath taken [to be our leader] we will strike your neck. Then the oath will be taken. The number of people who will take this pledge will be equal to the number of people at Badr. The inhabitants of the heavens and the earth will be pleased with them (the oath takers)”

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. However, ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has declared the chain very weak.

(٨٥٣٧) – أخبرني محمد بن المؤمل، ثنا الفضل بن محمد، ثنا نعيم بن حماد، ثنا أبو يوسف المقدسي، عن عبد الملك بن أبي سليمان، عن عمرو بن شعيب، عن أبيه، عن جده، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «في ذي القعدة تجاذب القبائل وتغادر، فينهب الحاج، فتكون ملحمة بمنى، يكثر فيها القتلى، ويسيل فيها الدماء، حتى تسيل دماؤهم على عقبة الجمرة، وحتى يهرب صاحبهم فيأتي بين الركن والمقام، فيبايع وهو كاره، يقال له: إن أبيت ضربنا عنقك، يبايعه مثل عدة أهل بدر يرضى عنهم ساكن السماء وساكن الأرض» قال أبو يوسف: فحدثني محمد بن عبد الله، عن عمرو بن شعيب، عن أبيه، عن عبد الله بن عمرو رضي الله عنهما، قال: «يحج الناس معا ويعرفون معا على غير إمام، فبينما هم نزول بمنى إذ أخذهم كالكلب، فثارت القبائل بعضها إلى بعض، واقتتلوا حتى تسيل العقبة دما، فيفزعون إلى خيرهم، فيأتونه وهو ملصق وجهه إلى الكعبة يبكي كأني أنظر إلى دموعه، فيقولون: هلم فلنبايعك، فيقول: ويحكم كم عهد قد نقضتموه وكم دم قد سفكتموه، فيبايع كرها فإذا أدركتموه فبايعوه فإنه المهدي في الأرض، والمهدي في السماء».
