Question
What is the authenticity of this Hadith?
«لا يتمنى أحدكم الموت، ولا يدع به من قبل أن يأتيه»
None of you should wish for death or pray for it before it comes to him
Answer
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith in his Sahih. The Hadith is therefore authentic.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “None of you should wish for or supplicate for death before it comes to him. When a person passes away, his deeds come to an end. The prolonged life of a believer only increases him in good.
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2682)
See similar Hadiths recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim which prohibit wishing for death here.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
