What is the reference for this narration?
اسمع تعلم، واصمت تسلم
Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Listen and you will learn, be silent and you will be safe.”
Answer
I have not come across this exact statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in any authentic source. This narration appears in Shi’i sources.
However, Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded the second sentence as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu). This version is suitable to quote:
Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Conceal yourself [identity], you will not be spoken of and be silent, you will be safe.”
(As Samt wa Adabul Lisan: 613)
Additionally, the following narrations may also be quoted:
1) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever remains silent [from speaking evil] will be saved.”
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2501, with a chain whose narrators are reliable, refer Fathul Bari, before Hadith: 6474)
2) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once ascended Safa, took hold of his tongue and said, “O tongue! Speak good you will benefit, remain silent from evil you will be safe, [or else] you will regret.”
(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 10446)

(٦١٣) – حدثني محمد بن عبد المجيد التيمي، حدثني الوليد بن صالح، قال: قال علي رضي الله عنه: «وار شخصك لا تذكر، واصمت تسلم».
سنن الترمذي:
(٢٥٠١) – حدثنا قتيبة، قال: حدثنا ابن لهيعة، عن يزيد بن عمرو المعافري، عن أبي عبد الرحمن الحبلي، عن عبد الله بن عمرو، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «من صمت نجا».
هذا حديث غريب، لا نعرفه إلا من حديث ابن لهيعة.
وأبو عبد الرحمن الحبلي هو: عبد الله بن يزيد.
المعجم الكبير للطبراني:
(١٠٤٤٦) – حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله الحضرمي، ثنا عون بن سلام، ثنا أبو بكر النهشلي، عن الأعمش، عن أبي وائل، عن عبد الله، أنه ارتقى الصفا فأخذ بلسانه فقال: يا لسان، قل خيرا تغنم، واسكت عن شر تسلم، من قبل أن تندم، ثم قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «أكثر خطايا ابن آدم في لسانه».
