Question
Where does the following statement come from, and what does it mean?
يا طيبة يا طابة، يا مسكينة، لا تقبلي الكنوز، أرفع أجاجيرك على أجاجير القرى
Answer
Imam ‘Umar ibn Shabbah (rahimahullah) has recorded this statement from Ka’b Al-Ahbar (rahimahullah), who stated that it was found in the Tawrah. It is not a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
Ka‘b Al-Ahbar (rahimahullah) said: “We find in the Book of Allah which was revealed to Nabi Musa (‘alayhis salam) that Allah Ta‘ala said regarding Madinah: ‘O Taybah, O Tabah, O Miskinah (city of the humble), do not accept treasures. I will raise your rooftops above the rooftops of the other towns.’”
(Tarikhul Madinah, vol. 1, pg. 163)
This narration mentions the special honour and status of Madinah Munawwarah above other places, and shows that its status is not based on worldly wealth.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
