Is the following Hadith referring to poor Muslims or all Muslims regardless of rich/poor?

«ما من مسلم كسا مسلما ثوبا إلا كان في حفظ من الله ما دام منه عليه خرقة»

 

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever clothes a Muslim will remain under the protection of Allah as long as a single piece of that item remains on his body.”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2484)

Although the Hadith is general, this specific reward appears to refer to clothing a needy Muslim for the following reasons:

1) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported this Hadith after providing clothing to a beggar. See the complete narration here.

2) ‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has cited this Hadith under the chapter, “Encouragement to provide clothing for a poor person.” (Targhib, vol. 3, pg. 116)

3) Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith in At Tarikhul Kabir. The wording of this version is: “Whoever grants a beggar something to wear, will remain in the protection of Allah as long as a single piece remains on him.” (At Tarikhul Kabir, vol. 3, pg. 340, number: 2905, edition of An Nashirul Mutamayyiz)

Nevertheless, clothing any Muslim will undoubtedly yield great reward as well.

سنن الترمذي:
(٢٤٨٤) – حدثنا محمود بن غيلان، قال: حدثنا أبو أحمد الزبيري، قال: حدثنا خالد بن طهمان أبو العلاء، قال: حدثنا حصين، قال: جاء سائل فسأل ابن عباس، فقال ابن عباس، للسائل: أتشهد أن لا إله إلا الله؟ قال: نعم، قال: أتشهد أن محمدا رسول الله؟ قال: نعم. قال: وتصوم رمضان؟ قال: نعم. قال: سألت وللسائل حق، إنه لحق علينا أن نصلك، فأعطاه ثوبا ثم قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «ما من مسلم كسا مسلما ثوبا إلا كان في حفظ من الله ما دام منه عليه خرقة».
هذا حديث حسن غريب من هذا الوجه.

١ – عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «ما من مسلم كسا مسلما ثوبا إلا كان في حفظ الله، مادام عليه منه خرقة» رواه الترمذي والحاكم، كلاهما من رواية خالد بن طهمان.
ولفظ الحاكم: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «من كسا مسلما ثوبا لم يزل في ستر الله مادام عليه منه خيط أو سلك» قال الترمذي: حديث حسن غريب، وقال الحاكم: صحيح الإسناد.

التاريخ الكبير للبخاري: (٣/ ٣٤٠)
(٢٩٠٥) – حصين بن مالك.
حدثنا عمرو بن علي، قال: حدثنا أبو قتيبة، قال: حدثنا أبو العلاء الخفاف، عن حصين بن مالك، سمع ابن عباس، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: «من كسا سائلا ثوبا، كان في حفظ الله، ما كان عليه قطعة».
