Question
Mulla ‘Ali Qari refers to ‘Afifi Al-Kazaruni in Mirqat. Who is this Scholar?
Answer
The scholar you are referring to is Abul Walid; Ahmad ibn Musaddad ibn Muhammad ‘Afifud Din/Al ‘Afif Al Kazaruni (rahimahullah). He was a Shafi’i Scholar of the 9th century of Islam. He was born in Madinah and passed away there too in the year 887 A.H.
He studied under several Scholars among them was ‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah).
He was a Shafi’i Jurist and was acquainted with Hadith as well.
(Refer: Ad Daw-ul Lami’, vol. 2 pg. 225 and Al A’alam, vol. 1 pg. 257)
It seems like ‘Afif Al Kazaruni (rahimahullah) had his own copy/manuscript of Masabih. Mulla ‘Ali Al Qari (rahimahullah) has often quoted him when there is some variation in the wording of the Hadith. (…و في أصل السيد عفيف الكازروني…/ قال الكازروني في بعض نسخ المصابيح)
(See examples of this in Mirqat, Hadith: 305, 437 and 814)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
