Question
How do we reconcile these Hadiths?
1. Bara (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates: “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) saying, ‘None loves the Ansar but a Believer, and none hates them but a Hypocrite. So Allah will love him who loves them, and He will hate him who hates them.”
2. ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) mentions: “By Him Who split up the seed and created something living, Rasulullah (sallallhu ‘alayhi wasallam) gave me a promise that no one but a Believer would love me, and none but a Hypocrite would nurse a grudge against me.
Answer
There is no contradiction between these two Hadiths. Just as loving the Ansar is a sign of Iman, so is the love for Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu).
Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) mentioned the Ansar in one narration and Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu) in another based on the situation and need of that moment.
Both these Hadiths are authentic.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
