What is the status of the following hadiths?
1) Thawban (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Two groups of my Ummah Allah has protected from the Hellfire, a group that will conquer India and a group that will be with ‘Isa son of Maryam (‘alayhimas salam)”
2) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) promised us the conquest of India. If I (Abu Hurayra) were to come across that I will spend my soul and wealth. If I am killed then I am among the best of martyrs. And if I return then I am Abu Hurayrah, the freed.”
3) Nu’aym ibn Hammad in Al-Fitan has recorded that Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said that the Messenger of Allah, (sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), mentioned India and said, “A group of you will conquer India, Allah Ta’ala will open for them [India] until they come with its kings chained, Allah Ta’ala having forgiven their sins. When they return [from India], they will find Sayyiduna ‘Isa ibn Maryam in Syria.”
The first two narrations you have quoted are recorded by Imam Nasa’i (rahimahullah) in his Al Mujtaba and Nu’aym ibn Hammad in kitabul Fitan. Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has also recorded a portion of the second narration in his Al Mustadrak.
(Al Mujtaba, hadith numbers: 3173-3175 and Kitabul Fitan, hadith: 115. Mustadrak Hakim vol. 3 pg. 514)
These two narrations are acceptable.
(Also see Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 5 pg. 282)
The third narration is also recorded by Nu’aym ibn Hammad (rahimahullah) in Kitabul Fitan. However this particular chain is weak.
(Kitabul Fitan, hadith: 1150 and 1153)
