Authenticity of the narration regarding abandoning a Muslim and defending a Muslim’s honour

Question

Can you provide the authenticity of this Hadith?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Any Muslim who will desert/abandon a Muslim who is confronted with a situation wherein his respect and honour is being violated, Allah Ta’ala will desert him in a situation when [he will be in need] of His help. Any Muslim who will come to the aid/defence of a Muslim in a situation wherein his respect and honour is being violated, Allah will assist him in a situation when [he will be in need] of His help.”

Answer

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The chain consists of an unknown narrator and therefore this particular chain will be deemed weak.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4850)

However, Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded a corroborating narration which ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared sound (hasan). The Hadith in question could therefore be graded sound due to corroboration (hasan li ghayrihi).

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 8637, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 7 pg. 267)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
