Question

What is the status of this Hadith?

“Whoever carries the Janazah for forty steps, forty of his major sins will be wiped out.” Ibn Majah

Answer

I have not come across this wording in Sunan Ibn Majah, nor in any other primary Hadith source. I have also not come across its chain.
The Hadith appears in certain Fiqh books. ‘Allamah ‘Ayni (rahimahullah) has cited the Hadith and has referenced it to Abu Bakr an Najjad.

(Al Binayah, vol. 3, pg. 242. Also see: Al Mabsut of Imam Sarakhsi, vol. 2, pg. 56)

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded the following wording:

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever carries the bier from each of its four sides, Allah will forgive forty of his major sins.”

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 5916)
