Is this Hadith authentic?

A man said to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), “My mother died suddenly and I thought that if she had lived she would have given alms. So, if I give alms now on her behalf, will she get the reward?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied in the affirmative.

 

Answer

Imams Bukhari and Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith. The Hadith is therefore authentic.

Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reported that a man once told Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), “My mum has passed away suddenly [without making a bequest] and I believe that if she could speak, she would have given charity. Would she be rewarded if I give charity on her behalf?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Yes.”

The commentators have stated that the Sahabi who asked the question was Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and his mother was ‘Amrah (radiyallahu ‘anha).

(١٣٨٨) – حدثنا سعيد بن أبي مريم، حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، قال: أخبرني هشام بن عروة، عن أبيه، عن عائشة رضي الله عنها: أن رجلا قال للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن أمي افتلتت نفسها، وأظنها لو تكلمت تصدقت، فهل لها أجر إن تصدقت عنها؟ قال: «نعم».

(٢٧٦٠) – حدثنا إسماعيل، قال: حدثني مالك، عن هشام بن عروة، عن أبيه، عن عائشة رضي الله عنها: أن رجلا قال للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن أمي افتلتت نفسها وأراها لو تكلمت تصدقت، أفأتصدق عنها؟ قال: «نعم تصدق عنها».

صحيح مسلم:
(١٠٠٤) – وحدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن نمير، حدثنا محمد بن بشر، حدثنا هشام، عن أبيه، عن عائشة، أن رجلا أتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: يا رسول الله، إن أمي افتلتت نفسها ولم توص، وأظنها لو تكلمت تصدقت، أفلها أجر، إن تصدقت عنها؟ قال: «نعم».
