Did Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) see Allah Ta’ala on the night of Mi’raj?

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) writes in his commentary on sahih Muslim:  The preferred view, according to the majority of the ‘Ulama is that, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) did see Allah Ta’ala on the night of Mi’raj with his naked eyes.’

(Sharhun Nawawi, ‘ala Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 436)

This was the view of several Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum), among them are: Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, Sayyiduna Anas and Sayyiduna Abu Dhar (radiyallahu’anhum).

This is also supported by the following Hadiths:

1. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘ I saw my Lord, the most Honoured, the most High’

(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith: 2580)

The narrators have been confirmed as reliable by ‘Allamah Haythami in Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.1 pg.78.

2. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) saw Allah Ta’ala twice; once with the naked eye, and once with his heart.’

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat; see Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.1 pg.79)

The narrators of this have been declared reliable by ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) – Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.1 pg.79.

Also see a detailed discussion in support of the above, in Fathul Mulhim, of ‘Allamah Shabbir Ahmad ‘Uthmani (rahimahullah) vol.2 pg.190, Hadith: 444.
