Did ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) Shake Women’s Hands on Behalf of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

Question

I would like to know if there is a Hadith where the women who visited Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to take an oath of allegiance mentioned that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) did not shake hands with them; rather, Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) shook hands with them on his behalf.

Is the Hadith authentic?

Answer

‘Allamah Waliyyud Din Ibnul ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has declared this unreliable.

After mentioning a few narrations regarding how the women’s pledge of allegiance was taken, he writes:

“It is also said that ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) would shake their hands on his behalf. None of these reports is authentic, especially the last [i.e., the report about ‘Umar shaking their hands]. How could ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) do something that the one protected from sin [Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] did not do?”

(Tarhut Tathrib, vol. 5, pg. 396)

Qadi Abu Bakr Ibnul ‘Arabi (rahimahullah) also mentions the narration that Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) shook their hands on behalf of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), among other narrations, and states:

“This is weak. Reliance should be upon what has been reported in the authentic narrations.”

(Ahkamul Quran, vol. 7, pg. 173)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
