Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
«يا معشر من أسلم بلسانه ولم يدخل الإيمان قلبه، لا تؤذوا المسلمين، ولا تعيروهم، ولا تطلبوا عثراتهم، فإنه من يطلب عورة المسلم يطلب الله عورته، ومن يطلب الله عورته يفضحه، ولو في جوف بيته»
Answer
Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith and has declared it authentic.
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) once ascended the pulpit and said in a raised voice, “O those who have accepted Islam with their tongues [outwardly] while Iman has not entered their hearts! Do not cause harm to the Muslims, do not taunt them and do not search for their faults. For verily the one who searches for the faults of a Muslim, Allah Ta’ala will take him to task for his faults or expose him, and the one who Allah takes to task, Allah will disgrace him even if he is within the privacy of his home.”

(٥٧٦٣) – أخبرنا عبد الله بن سليمان بن الأشعث السجستاني، ببغداد، ومحمد بن عبد الرحمن بن محمد الدغولي قالا: حدثنا محمود بن آدم، حدثنا الفضل بن موسى، حدثنا الحسين بن واقد، عن أوفى بن دلهم، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر، قال: صعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هذا المنبر، فنادى بصوت رفيع وقال: «يا معشر من أسلم بلسانه ولم يدخل الإيمان قلبه، لا تؤذوا المسلمين، ولا تعيروهم، ولا تطلبوا عثراتهم، فإنه من يطلب عورة المسلم يطلب الله عورته، ومن يطلب الله عورته يفضحه، ولو في جوف بيته» ونظر ابن عمر يوما إلى البيت فقال: «ما أعظمك، وأعظم حرمتك، وللمؤمن أعظم عند الله حرمة منك».
