Question

There is a Hadith recorded in Sahih Ibn Hibban on the authority of Sayyiduna Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that the Day of Judgement will be fifty thousand years. The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said for a believer it will be shorter than the time spent in praying an obligatory prayer.

Is this Hadith authentic? Has Imam Haythami (rahimaullah) classified this Hadith as weak in Majma’uz Zawaid?

 

Answer

This Hadith has been reported by Imam Ahmad and others (rahimahumullah)

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 3, pg. 75)

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic.

(Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 5099)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has graded the chain to be sound despite there being a slight weakness in one of the narrators. (إسناده حسن على ضعف في راويه)

(Majmau’z Zawaid, vol. 10, pg. 337)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has also graded the chain to be sound (سنده حسن)

Translation

It has been reported on the authority of Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that it was said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) [i.e., a person once remarked]: “A day [i.e., the day of Qiyamah], the duration of which shall be [equal to] fifty thousand years [of this world], what a long day this will be!”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then replied: “By the being in who’s control my soul is, verily it [i.e., that day] will be lightened upon the believer; so much so that it will be lighter [i.e., feel shorter] than an obligatory prayer that he used to pray in the Dunya.”
