Question

Please provide an explanation of this Hadith:

“Whoever plays with dice it is as if he has dipped his hands in the flesh and blood of a pig.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2260)

Answer

The word used in the Hadith you are referring to is “نردشير” which translates to backgammon (a game played with dice) and not dice itself. See here

Therefore, the correct translation of the Hadith in question is as follows:

Sayyiduna Buraydah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever plays backgammon, it is as if he has dipped his hand into the blood and flesh of a swine.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2260)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) explains that “dipping” in this Hadith refers to eating. Just as eating pork is prohibited, so too is backgammon.

Allamah Tibi (rahimahullah) explains that [the mention of pig blood and flesh] in this Hadith is to portray a hideous image in a person’s mind so that he desists totally from backgammon.

(Sahih Muslim with al Minhaj, Hadith: 5856, Mirqat, Hadith: 4500)

Kindly refer to a Mufti/Darul Ifta for a fatwa regarding playing with dice or backgammon.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
