Question

Is this an authentic Hadith on not fasting while in the state of travel?

Answer

The Hadith you are referring to is recorded in Sahih Muslim and is therefore authentic.

Sayyiduna Hamzah ibn ‘Amr al Aslami (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once said: “O Rasulullah! I have the strength to fast while on a journey. Is there any sin in this?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “It is a concession from Allah. Whoever takes advantage of it, that is good and whoever wants to fast there is no sin upon him.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1121)

Other versions of this Hadith state that he told Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) that he prefers to fast in Ramadan while travelling instead of delaying the fast and making up for it later.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 2395)

See similar Hadiths here and here.

Notes:

1) If a person chooses to practise on the concession, he will have to make up for the missed fasts after Ramadan.

2) Due to modern forms of transportation, travels are generally not arduous. Some scholars have therefore encouraged that a person fast so that he does not lose out on the blessings of Ramadan.
Consult a Mufti/Darul Ifta for a ruling specific to your situation.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
