Question

Is the translation of this Hadith correct?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the lowest of which is the removal of what is harmful from the path; and modesty is a branch of faith.”-Bukhari

Answer

Imams Bukhari and Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith with variation in the wording.

The following version appears in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Iman has over sixty branches and modesty is part of Iman.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 9, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 35)

The following version appears in Sahih Muslim:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Iman has over seventy or over sixty branches. the most excellent is the declaration of ‘la ilaha illallah’ [There is no deity but Allah] and the lowest is removing a harmful object from the path and modesty is a branch of faith.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 35)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
