Question
Is this narration authentic:
عن ابن عباس عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : إن في جهنم لواديا يستعيذ جهنم من ذلك الوادي في كل يوم أربعمائة مرة أعد ذلك الوادي للمرائين من أمة محمد لحامل كتاب الله وللمصدق في غير ذات الله وللحاج إلى بيت الله وللخارج في سبيل الله
Answer
Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) with a weak chain.
(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 12803. Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 222)
‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has expressed reservation in this being a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). He says, “Perhaps this is the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).”
(Targhib, vol. 1 pg. 67)
Translation
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “There is a valley in Jahannam from which Jahannam seeks refuge four hundred times daily. That valley has been prepared for those who are ostentatious/show off from the ummah of Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam); [specifically] the carriers of the Quran, those who [give charity] for besides Allah, those who go for Hajj [with the incorrect intention] and those who go out in Allah’s path [with the incorrect intention].
Note: The first part of this Hadith is supported by a weak narration recorded in Sunan Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah. See here.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
