Is the following narration suitable to quote?

عن مكحول قال قال لي كعب الأحبار اتبعني فاتبعته حتى وصلنا إلى جبل في غار يقال له قاسيون فصلى وصليت فسمعته يجتهد في الدعاء ثم خرج حتى وصلنا إلى موضع قتل ابن آدم أخاه فصلى وصليت معه فسمعته يجتهد في الدعاء ثم سار حتى دخلنا المدينة من باب الفراديس فسمعته يقول يا أيها الناس أنا كعب الأحبار وجدت في ألواح شيث بن آدم أن الله تبارك وتعالى يقول الفراديس جنتي وإليها يجتمع أهل محبتي وأهل عنايتي فقلت سمعتك تدعو مجتهدا فما وقال الأكفاني فمما ذاك قال سألت الله عز وجل أن يصلح بين هذين الرجلين علي ومعاوية وسألته أن يرزقني كفافا وولدا ذكرا ثم لقيته بعد ذلك فسألته فقال قد والله استجاب الله تعالى لي ورزقني ولدا ذكرا وبعث إليه معاوية بألف درهم وكسوة وكتب معاوية إلى علي فسأله الصلح والكف عن الحرب فاصطلحا وتكاتبا على ذلك

 

Answer

Imam Ibn ‘Asakir (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. However, he has declared the text unreliable (munkar). He further says that Makhul (rahimahullah) never met Ka’b Al Ahbar.

The narration is therefore not suitable to quote.

 

Gist of the narration:

Makhul (rahimahullah) once went on a journey with Ka’b Al Ahbar. Among other places, they went to a cave and the place where Nabi Adam’s (‘alayhis salam) son murdered his brother. Ka’b Al Ahbar, offered Salah and engaged fervently in du’a at these places. His du’as were supposedly answered.
