Meaning of a word in the du’a to recite when retiring to bed

Question

What is meant by الندي الأعلى in the following Hadith?

بسم الله وضعت جنبي اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي، وأخسئ شيطاني، وفك رهاني، واجعلني في الندي الأعلى

Answer

This is a du’a that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would recite when retiring to bed.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5015)

‘الندي الأعلى’ refers to the high gathering of angels, who are brought close to Allah Ta’ala. The meaning would therefore be, ‘Place me among the high gathering of angels.’

(Refer: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 6540 and Badhlul Majhud, Hadith: 5054)

Some versions of the Hadith have the words ‘النداء الاعلى’. In this case, the meaning will be, ‘Make me among those in Jannah who will call out to those in Jahannam, ‘We have found the promise of our Rabb to be true…’ (Surah A’araf, Verse: 44).

(Refer: Sharh Ibn Raslan, Hadith: 5054)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
