What is meant by …fima quri-a ‘alayhi… in the sanad?

Answer

This is referring to a situation in which the Hadith was acquired from the mentioned Shaykh (Imam Malik in this case) without him verbally uttering it. Rather, someone else actually recited it to the Shaykh, with his acknowledgement.

This is also a legitamite form of Hadith aqcuisition, known as ‘Al-Qira-atu ‘ala Shaykh’.
