Kindly provide the reference and authenticity of the following Hadith:

يدخل الجنة أقوام أفئدتهم مثل أفئدة الطير

Does it refer to having a sensitive heart?

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The Hadith is therefore Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “People will enter Jannah whose hearts are like the hearts of birds.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2840)

Explanation:
I have not come across an explanation specifically stating that it refers to having a sensitive heart. The comparison between the hearts of these people and the hearts of birds has been explained in a few ways.

1. Softness of the heart: Their hearts are soft and pure. They are free from malice and jealousy, just as the hearts of birds are free from such qualities.
2. Tawakkul: Their hearts resemble the hearts of birds in their reliance upon Allah Ta‘ala. The Birds go out in the morning hungry and return in the evening full, relying upon Allah for their sustenance.
3. Fear: The comparison is to the natural fear in birds which are easily startled. Likewise, these people have the fear of Allah Ta‘ala.

(٢٨٤٠) – حدثنا حجاج بن الشاعر ، حدثنا أبو النضر هاشم بن القاسم الليثي ، حدثنا إبراهيم، (يعني ابن سعد )، حدثنا أبي ، عن أبي سلمة ، عن أبي هريرة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: « يدخل الجنة أقوام أفئدتهم مثل أفئدة الطير».

مرقاة المفاتيح شرح مشكاة المصابيح:
(٥٦٢٥) – (وعن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله – صلى الله تعالى عليه وسلم: «يدخل الجنة أقوام أفئدتهم» أي: قلوبهم «مثل أفئدة الطير» أي: في الرقة واللينة والرحمة والصفاء، والخلو عن الحسد والحقد والغل والبغضاء، ومجمله: لكونها خالية من كل ذنب، سليمة من كل عيب. قال النووي رحمه الله قيل: مثلها في رقتها، كما ورد: «أهل اليمن أرق أفئدة وألين قلوبا» ، وقيل: في الخوف والهيبة، والطير أكثر الحيوان خوفا وفزعا. قال تعالى: {إنما يخشى الله من عباده العلماء} [فاطر: ٢٨] . وقيل في التوكل كما «لو أنكم تتوكلون على الله حق توكله لرزقكم كما يرزق الطير تغدو خماصا وتروح بطانا» ، وقد قال تعالى: {وكأين من دابة لا تحمل رزقها الله يرزقها وإياكم وهو السميع العليم} [العنكبوت: ٦٠] . (رواه مسلم) وكذا أحمد في مسنده.
