Question
Is there any Hadith which mentions that a Sahabiyah asked Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) regarding her garment that it trails on the floor so does it become impure and Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) replied in the negative?
Answer
1. A Sahabiyyah from the Banu ‘Abdil Ash-hal tribe (radiyallahu’anha) asked Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam): ‘There is a dirty road between me and the Masjid (so my clothes/shoes/feet become soiled)’
Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) enquired: ‘Is there a cleaner road after it?’
She replied yes,
Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said: ‘This (road will wipe out the effect) of that’
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 387, Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 533 and Musannaf ibn Abi Sahybah, Hadith: 621 with a strong chain.)
2. Sayyidatuna Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu’anha) was asked by a woman about the state of her clothing which was long, and she would walk on dirty and clean roads. Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu’anha) said she asked Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) about this and he said: ‘The (clean) area after (the dirty one) will cleanse it’
(Muwatta Imam Malik, Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 143, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 386 and Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 620)
Note: The above applies only if the dirt or impurity that soils the clothes is dry. If not, then it will only be cleansed after washing it off. (Badhlul Majhud)
