Question
Kindly authenticate the following Dhikr which is said to be attributed to Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) to recite in Sajda Sahw (Prostration of Forgetfulness) and also please provide its source:
سبحان من لا يسهوا ولا ينسى
Subhana man la yas-hu wala yansa
Also, I found a similar Dhikr for Sajda Sahw:
سبحان من لا ينام ولا يسهو
Subhana man la yanamu wala yas-hu
“Glory be to the one who neither sleeps nor forgets”
Kindly inform me which of the above two Dhikrs are attributed to Imam Shafi’i? Also inform us if it is permissible to say the above Dhikrs in our Sajdah Sahw if they are not proven from authentic Sunnah.
Answer
I have not come across these two tasbihs attributed to Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah).
The second tasbih; سبحان من لا ينام ولا يسهو has been recommended in certain Fiqh books to recite in Sajdah Sahw as the meaning is apt. However, Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) has stated that he has not come across any basis for this. (لم أجد له أصلا)
(At Talkhisul Habir, vol. 2 pg. 839)
Note: I have merely answered you query. This should not be viewed as a Fiqh ruling. Kindly contact a Mufti/Darul Ifta for the ruling regarding reciting this tasbih in Sajdah Sahw.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
