Question

I heard an incident regarding  Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) taking action against someone who slapped a non Muslim. I think he called the man in question all the way from Egypt.

Can you provide the details and reference for this incident?

Answer

The incident in question is reported by Imam Ibn ‘Abdil Hakam in his Futuh Misr.

What happened was that a son of Sayyiduna ‘Amr ibnul ‘As (radiyallahu’anhu) -who the governor of Egypt at that time- had whipped a local coptic.

This coptic came to Madinah Munawwarah to complain of this.

Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) summoned the father and son (i.e, Sayyiduna ‘Amr and his son) to come all the way from Cairo to Madinah so that the coptic could get his justice.

(Futuh Misr; Kanzul ‘Ummal, hadith: 36010 & Hayatus sahabah, vol.2 pg.148-Dar Ibn Kathir)

This is one of many incidents regarding the high level of Justice that Islam promotes.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
