Question

Please provide a reference for the following incident regarding the sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum): “When two companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) met they wouldn’t part company until one of them recited Surah Asr to the other.

After doing so one of them of them would say “assalamu alaykum” to the other.’

Answer

This narration is recorded by Imams Tabarani and Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah)

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 5124 and Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 8639. Also see Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.10 pg.233 & pg.307)

The Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhu) would do this to remind each other of the profound message in this surah.

This also shows their constant habit of saying the salam to each other.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
