Second Jama’ah in a Masjid

Question

Is there a Hadith that talks about one should not make another fard salah in Jama’ah in the same masjid?

Example one set of people make ‘Asr salah in Jama’ah in the masjid. Then another group of people come to the masjid for ‘Asr after the first Jama’ah so they pray ‘Asr in Jama’ah in the same masjid as a second Jama’ah.

Answer

1. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu’anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘I indeed intended to instruct a person to lead the congregation, so I may go to the homes of those men who do not attend the congregation so that their homes be burnt…’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2420 & Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1481)

Muhaddith Zafar Ahmad ‘Uthmani (rahimahullah) explains:

‘If offering a second congregation was allowed, Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would have not intended to burn their homes, since they could have still acquired the reward of salah in jama’ah later…

(I’laus Sunan, vol.4 pg.278)

2.  Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (rahimahullah) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) arrived at his masjid from the outskirts of madinah, and found that the sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) had already completed the salah [in congregation]. So he (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) went to his home, gathered his household and offered salah with them [in the home, instead of the masjid].’

(Al-Mu’jamul Kabir. ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the narrators as reliable; Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.2 pg.45)

If offering a second congregation in the masjid was an option, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would have lead his household in the masjid rather than in his house…

3. Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) has stated;

‘The only reason I have disliked that [offering a second jama’ah in the masjid] is because it was not the practice of our predecessors. In fact some of them even discouraged it.’

(Kitabul Umm, see I’laus Sunan, vol.4 pg.283)

For reasons like the above -and others- many of the Imams of Fiqh have ruled this practice as disliked.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
