What is the source and authenticity of the following du’a?

 Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min jahdil bala-i wa darakish shaqa-i wa su-il qada-i wa shamatatil a’da

 

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded the following narration:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Seek Allah’s protection from the hardship of severe trials, from falling into misery, from an evil decree, and from the malicious joy of enemies.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6616)

In this Hadith, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) instructs us to seek Allah’s refuge from these four matters. One may supplicate with the following words:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوءِ القَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الأَعْدَاءِ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min jahdil bala-i wa darakish shaqa-i wa su-il qada-i wa shamatatil a’da

In fact, Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded another Hadith wherein Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) himself would seek protection from these very things.

(٦٦١٦) – حدثنا مسدد، حدثنا سفيان، عن سمي، عن أبي صالح، عن أبي هريرة، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «تعوذوا بالله من جهد البلاء، ودرك الشقاء، وسوء القضاء، وشماتة الأعداء».

(٦٣٤٧) – حدثنا علي بن عبد الله، حدثنا سفيان، حدثني سمي، عن أبي صالح، عن أبي هريرة: «كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يتعوذ من جهد البلاء، ودرك الشقاء، وسوء القضاء، وشماتة الأعداء» قال سفيان: «الحديث ثلاث، زدت أنا واحدة، لا أدري أيتهن هي».

صحيح مسلم:
(٢٧٠٧) – حدثني عمرو الناقد، وزهير بن حرب، قالا: حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة، حدثني سمي، عن أبي صالح، عن أبي هريرة، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، «كان يتعوذ من سوء القضاء، ومن درك الشقاء، ومن شماتة الأعداء، ومن جهد البلاء»، قال عمرو في حديثه: قال سفيان: أشك أني زدت واحدة منها.
