Question

What is the status of the Hadith narrator Maslamah ibn Ja’far according to the scholars? Is there a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding him?

Answer

The Muhaddithun have differed with regard to the credibility of Maslamah ibn Ja’far. Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has declared him reliable (ثقة). Imam Azdi (rahimahullah) has declared him weak and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has stated that he is unknown.

مسلمة بن جعفر البجلي الأحمسي من أهل الكوفة ، يروي عن عمرو بن قيس والركين بن الربيع، روى عنه عمرو بن محمد العنقزي وأبو غسان النهدي.

المغني في الضعفاء:
(٦٢٣١) – مسلمة بن جعفر عن حسان بن حميد عن أنس في الناكح يده يجهل هو وشيخه، وضعفه الأزدي.

لسان الميزان: (٨/ ٥٧)
(٧٧٢٧) – مسلمة بن جعفر.
عن حسان بن حميد، عَن أَنس رضي الله عنه في سب الناكح يده.
يجهل هو وشيخه.
وقال الأزدي: ضعيف. انتهى.
وفي ”الثقات“ لابن حِبَّان: مسلمة بن جعفر البجلي الأحمسي من أهل الكوفة يروي عن عمرو بن قيس والركين بن الربيع روى عنه عمرو بن محمد العنقزي وأبو غسان النهدي. فيحتمل أن يكون هو ثم ظهر أنه هو فقد ذكره بذلك كله البخاري ولم يذكر فيه جرحا.
