How reliable is this Hadith?
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The bearer of the Quran is the bearer of the flag of Islam. He who honours him has honoured Allah and whoever insults and despises him the curse of Allah is upon him.”
This narration is recorded in Musnadul Firdaws on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).
(Musnadul Firdaws, Hadith: 2690)
However, the Muhaddithun have declared the Hadith a fabrication. It is therefore not suitable to quote.
(Refer: Dhaylul La-Alil Masnu’ah, vol. 1 pg. 112/113, Hadith: 116, Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 1 pg. 296. Also see: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 3660, Al Mudawi, Hadith: 1540 and Al Mughir, Hadith: 154)
The following statement of Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad (rahimahullah) may be quoted instead:
Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad (rahimahullah) said: “The bearer of the Quran is the bearer of the flag of Islam. It is inappropriate for him to speak futile things with those who engage in futile talk. He should not be neglectful among the negligent ones, nor should he engage in futile pastimes with those who do so.”
(Akhlaqu Hamalatil Quran of Imam Ajurry: 37. Also see: Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 8 pg. 92)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
