Question

I am looking for the reference of the story of Silah ibn Ashyam who told his son to go forth in battle and become martyred so that he would be rewarded.

 

Answer

This incident is recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad ibn Hambal and At Tabaqatul Kubra of Imam Ibn Sa’d. The narrators are reliable.

Thabit Al Bunani (rahimahullah) reports: “Silah ibn Ashyam (rahimahullah) was once out in battle with his son. He addressed his son saying, “Go forth and fight so that I may anticipate reward [of your martyrdom].” The son courageously advanced and fought until he attained martyrdom. Silah (rahimahullah) himself then advanced and fought until he was martyred.  Some women gathered around Mu’adhah Al ‘Adawiyyah [to console her as she was the mother and wife of the two martyrs]. She said, “You are welcome if you are here to congratulate me. However, if you have come for any other reason [such as to console me], then you may depart.”

(١١٥٥) – حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا عفان، حدثنا حماد بن سلمة، أنبأنا ثابت البناني أن صلة بن أشيم كان في مغزى له ومعه ابن له فقال: أي بني تقدم فقاتل حتى أحتسبك، فحمل فقاتل حتى قتل رحمه الله، ثم تقدم فقتل فاجتمعت النساء عند امرأته معاذة العدوية فقالت: مرحبا إن كنتن لتهنيني فمرحبا، وإن كنتن جئتن لغير ذلك فارجعن.

وكان صلة قتل شهيدا في بعض المغازي في أول إمرة الحجاج بن يوسف على العراق.

وقال حماد بن سلمة: أخبرنا ثابت: أن صلة كان في الغزو، ومعه ابنه، فقال: أي بني! تقدم، فقاتل حتى أحتسبك.
فحمل، فقاتل، حتى قتل، ثم تقدم صلة، فقتل، فاجتمع النساء عند امرأته معاذة، فقالت: مرحبا
إن كنتن جئتن لتهنئنني، وإن كنتن جئتن لغير ذلك، فارجعن.
