Is this Hadith authentic?

«أول هذا الأمر نبوة ورحمة، ثم يكون خلافة ورحمة، ثم يكون ملكا ورحمة، ثم يكون إمارة ورحمة، ثم يتكادمون عليه تكادم الحمر فعليكم بالجهاد، وإن أفضل جهادكم الرباط، وإن أفضل رباطكم عسقلان»

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “[Din and Islam] began with Prophethood and mercy/justice. Thereafter, it will become a caliphate and mercy/justice. It will then transform into kingship and mercy/justice. It will then be an emirate and mercy/justice. Thereafter, people will fight over it like donkeys. [At this point], wage jihad. The best form of war is guarding the Muslim army and the best place to guard them is in ‘Asqalan.”

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 11138)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the narrators reliable (thiqat).

(١١١٣٨) – حدثنا أحمد بن النضر العسكري، ثنا سعيد بن حفص النفيلي، ثنا موسى بن أعين، عن ابن شهاب، عن فطر بن خليفة، عن مجاهد، عن ابن عباس، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أول هذا الأمر نبوة ورحمة، ثم يكون خلافة ورحمة، ثم يكون ملكا ورحمة، ثم يكون إمارة ورحمة، ثم يتكادمون عليه تكادم الحمر فعليكم بالجهاد، وإن أفضل جهادكم الرباط، وإن أفضل رباطكم عسقلان».

(٩٠٣٢) – وعن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم -: «أول هذا الأمر نبوة ورحمة، ثم يكون خلافة ورحمة، ثم يكون ملكا ورحمة، ثم يكون إمارة ورحمة، ثم يتكادمون عليها تكادم الحمير، فعليكم بالجهاد، وإن أفضل جهادكم الرباط، وإن أفضل رباطكم عسقلان».
