Question

How sound is the Hadith in Sunan Tirmidhi (2587) wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said that a person will be grilled by the fire until his upper lip is folded up reaching the middle of his head?

Also explain regarding the strength of the chain, ‘Darraj reporting from Abul Haytham’

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith as you have stated.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported: Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) [explained] the verse ‘[The fire will scorch their faces making them grimace’ (Surah Al Muminun, Verse: 104), he (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The fire will grill him causing his upper lip to shrink and until it reaches the middle of his head and his lower lip will hang so low that it will reach his navel.”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2587)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared this Hadith sound (hasanun gharib).

This particular Hadith is reported from Darraj who reports from Abul Haytham. See the strength of this chain here.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
