Question
What is the explanation of انا بريء in the following Hadith:
أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال انا برىء ممن حلق و سلق و خرق
(Sahih Muslim, Kitabul Iman, number 288 -104-)
Answer
Translation
Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:
‘I absolve myself from all those who [when befallen with calamity] shave their hair, raise their voices [screaming] and tear open their collars.’
Explanation
1. These were ways of the pagan Arabs showing their dissatisfaction with Allah’s decree.
2. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is actually distancing himself from such practices and their perpetrators. Its like saying: I have nothing to do with these people…
3. Being absolved here refers to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) actually absolving himself from having to intercede on such a sinner’s behalf.
(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1294)
4. Although Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) will indeed intercede for the sinners, these particular sinners will be deprived of that opportunity. This is a severe warning against such wrongs.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
