The importance of going out in battle with the correct intention

Question

Is the following narration authentic:

عن معاذ بن جبل عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال الغزو غزوان فأما من ابتغى وجه الله وأطاع الإمام وأنفق الكريمة وياسر الشريك واجتنب الفساد فإن نومه ونبهه أجر كله وأما من غزا فخرا ورياء وسمعة وعصى الإمام وأفسد في الأرض فإنه لم يرجع بالكفاف

Answer

Imams Abu Dawud and Nasai (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Sunan Nasai; Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 3188, 4195, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 2507)

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) concurs.

Translation

Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Battle is of two types; The one who seeks the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala, obeys the leader, spends from his choicest wealth, is kind towards his companions and avoids mischief. This person receives reward all the time, whether he is awake or asleep. As for the one who goes into battle to boast and to show off, disobeys the leader and spreads corruption, he will not return with any [reward].

(Refer: Mirqat, Hadith: 3846)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
