Is this authentic?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Do you think that this dead lamb was insignificant to its owners when they threw it away?’ They said:’Yes! It is because of its insignificance that they threw it away O Messenger of Allah!’ He said: ‘The world is more insignificant to Allah than this to its owners.'”
Answer
Imams Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Mustawrid ibn Shaddad (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The full Hadith is as follows:
Sayyiduna Mustawrid ibn Shaddad (radiyallahu ‘anhu) relates, “I was with the group of travellers with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) who stopped at a dead lamb. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Do you think that this was insignificant to its owners when they discarded it?’ They said:
‘Yes! It is because of its insignificance that they discarded it O Messenger of Allah!’ He said: ‘The world is more insignificant to Allah than this to its owners.'”
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2321 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 4111)
Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith sound (hasan).

(٢٣٢١) – حدثنا سويد بن نصر قال: أخبرنا عبد الله بن المبارك، عن مجالد، عن قيس بن أبي حازم، عن المستورد بن شداد، قال: كنت مع الركب الذين وقفوا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على السخلة الميتة، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أترون هذه هانت على أهلها حين ألقوها»، قالوا: من هوانها ألقوها يا رسول الله، قال: «فالدنيا أهون على الله من هذه على أهلها» وفي الباب عن جابر، وابن عمر: «حديث المستورد حديث حسن».
سنن ابن ماجه:
(٤١١١) – حدثنا يحيى بن حبيب بن عربي قال: حدثنا حماد بن زيد، عن مجالد بن سعيد الهمداني، عن قيس بن أبي حازم الهمداني، قال: حدثنا المستورد بن شداد، قال: إني لفي الركب مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، إذ أتى على سخلة منبوذة، قال: فقال: «أترون هذه هانت على أهلها» قال: قيل: يا رسول الله من هوانها، ألقوها، أو كما قال: قال: «فوالذي نفسي بيده للدنيا أهون على الله من هذه على أهلها».
