Hamdun was was asked, “Why is the speech of the Salaf more beneficial than our speech?” He replied, “They spoke to honour Islam, to save themselves, and to seek the pleasure of Ar-Rahman…”

Answer

Imam Abu Nu’aym and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this as the statement of the saint, Hamdun al Qassar (rahimahullah) [Demise: 271 A.H.]

Hamdun al Qassar (rahimahullah) was asked, “Why is the speech of the pious predecessors more beneficial than our speech?” He replied, “When they spoke, they spoke to honour Islam, for their salvation and to seek the pleasure of Allah. Whereas, we speak to honour ourselves, to seek the gains of the world and to please people.”

شعب الإيمان:
(١٧٠١) – سمعت، أبا عبد الرحمن السلمي يقول: سمعت محمد بن أحمد الفراء يقول: قيل لحمدون القصار: ما بال كلام السلف أنفع من كلامنا؟ قال: لأنهم تكلموا لعز الإسلام، ونجاة النفوس، ورضا الرحمن، ونحن نتكلم لعزة النفس، وطلب الدنيا، وقبول الخلق.
