Those who pass away while addicted to wine will not drink the wine of the Hereafter

Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“He who drinks wine in this world, and dies when he is addicted to it, will not drink it in the next.” (Abu Dawud)

Answer

Imams Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud (rahimahumallah) have recorded the following narration on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma):

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Every intoxicant is [forbidden like] wine/just like wine and every intoxicant is totally forbidden. Whoever drinks wine and passes away while addicted to it, will not drink it in the Hereafter.”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 1861, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 3671)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic (hasanun sahih).

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded the following version of the same Hadith:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Every intoxicant is [forbidden like] wine/just like wine and every intoxicant is totally forbidden. Whoever drinks wine in this world and passes away while addicted to it and does not repent, will not drink it in the Hereafter.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2003. Also see: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 5575)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
