Question

Kindly translate the following Hadith:

أخبرنا محمد بن أبي سعيد، أبنا زاهر بن أحمد، أبنا محمد بن معاذ، ثنا الحسين بن الحسن، ثنا عبد الوهاب الثقفي، عن إسحاق بن سويد، عن مطرف، أن رجلا من أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حدثه، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «إن إعطاء هذا المال فتنة، وإمساكه فتنة»

 

Answer

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith in his Musnad.

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5, pg. 58)

Translation

Mutarrif ibn ‘Abdillah (rahimahullah) reported that a man amongst the companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) narrated to him that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has said: “Verily [in] giving [away] this wealth [there] is a trial and [in] keeping it [also, there] is a trial.

Explanation

There is a trial for both the benefactor and beneficiary due to the possibility of tainting one’s spirituality through pride, boastfulness, or any other undesirable disease of the heart; this could also be due to misuse and/or unfitting distribution of the wealth.

حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، حدثنا شعبة، قال: سمعت إسحاق بن سويد، قال: سمعت مطرف بن عبد الله بن الشخير، يحدث عن رجل من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: كان بالكوفة أمير، قال: فخطب يوما، فقال: إن في إعطاء هذا المال فتنة، وفي إمساكه فتنة، وبذلك قام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في خطبته حتى فرغ، ثم نزل.
حديث رجل أعرابي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.

قوله: «إن في إعطاء هذا المال فتنة» فتنة، أي: للمعطَىٰ بالفتح، أو للمعطِي بالكسر من جهة خوف الرياء والسمعة، وترك العدل في القسمة.
