Question
Kindly comment on the authenticity of the following incident:
Someone spoke ill of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu anhu) in front of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu anhu). He said to that person: “What has happened to you? May Allah disfigure you! You have caused distress to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in his grave [by speaking ill of ‘Ali radiyallahu ‘anhu].”
Answer
This incident is recorded in Bahrul Fawaid of Al Kalabadhi [Demise: 384 A.H.].

The incident is also recorded in Fadailus Sahabah of Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) with slight variation in the wording. The wording of this version is as follows:
‘Urwah ibn Zubayr (rahimahullah) narrated: “A man spoke ill of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in the presence of ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu). ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) told him: “Do you know the occupant of this grave? It is Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdil-Muttalib. And ‘Ali is the son of Abu Talib who was the son of ‘Abdul-Muttalib [i.e., He is the cousin of Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam]. Do not speak of ‘Ali except with good, for if you despise him, you will harm this man in his grave.”

(١٠٨٩) – حدثنا الفضل بن الحباب البصري بالبصرة قال: نا القعنبي عبد الله بن مسلمة قثنا ابن لهيعة، عن أبي الأسود، عن عروة وهو ابن الزبير، أن رجلا وقع في علي بن أبي طالب بمحضر من عمر، فقال له عمر: تعرف صاحب هذا القبر؟ هو محمد بن عبد الله بن عبد المطلب، وعلي بن أبي طالب بن عبد المطلب، فلا تذكر عليا إلا بخير، فإنك إن أبغضته ” آذيت هذا في قبره.
