Question
Is the following saying of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) authentic/proven?
“I am surprised at the person who does not search for wealth by means of marriage, whereas Allah Ta’ala has stated “If they are poor, Allah will make them independent by his grace”
Answer
‘Allamah Zayla’i (rahimahullah) has referenced this statement of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) to Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq. ‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has also referenced these words to ‘Abdur Razzaq.
(Takhrijul Kashshaf of ‘Allamah Zayla’i, vol. 2 pg. 444, Hadith: 881 and Al Maqasidul Hasanah, pg. 83, Hadith: 162)
I could not locate these exact words in the current editions of Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq (nor in Tafsir ‘Abdur Razzaq). The following two versions appear in our copies:
1) Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Seek surplus [wealth] through nikah. He then recited the Verse: “If they are poor, Allah will make them independent by his grace.” (Surah Nur, Verse: 32)
(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq: 10385)
2) Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “I have not seen anything more [strange] than a man who does not seek surplus through nikah when Allah has said, “If they are poor, Allah will make them independent by his grace.”
(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq: 10393)
These narrations are suitable to quote.
