Question
Is this authentic?
Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said that if anyone falls ill then he must request his wife for some money from her mahr and he should use it to buy honey. Then he must put some rain water into it and drink the mixture. Insha Allah, he will be cured.
Answer
This narration is recorded in Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim, In Surah Nisa, Verse 4, under the Verse which discusses giving women their dowries.
Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “When any of you experiences an ailment, he should ask his wife for approximately three dirhams, then purchase honey with it. Thereafter, he should take rainwater and mix the two, for together they will be wholesome, nourishing, and a blessed cure.”
(Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim, Surah An Nisa, Verse: 4, vol. 3, pg. 862)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has declared the chain sound (hasan). He has also referenced the Hadith to Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim. In this version, the words ‘from her dowry’ have been included.
(Fathul Bari, vol. 10, pg. 170, under Hadith: 5716)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
