Question

Please provide the reference for the following Hadith:

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “One who acquires goods while keeping in mind its rights will find blessings in it, while one who acquires goods without keeping its rights in mind will be like one who eats but does not get full.”

Answer

This is part of a lengthy Hadith in Sahih Bukhari (Hadith: 2842) in which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“…wealth is an excellent achievement for the one who takes (his share of) wealth rightfully, (through halal means, and) by spending it in the path of Allah, and on the orphans, the needy and the travellers.

And he who doesn’t fulfill its right will be like (an animal) that eats but doesn’t get satisfied, and it will be a testimony against him on the day of Qiyamah”

(٢٨٤٢) – حدثنا محمد بن سنان: حدثنا فليح: حدثنا هلال، عن عطاء بن يسار، عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه ‌أن ‌رسول ‌الله ‌صلى ‌الله ‌عليه ‌وسلم ‌قام ‌على ‌المنبر، ‌فقال: «إنما ‌أخشى ‌عليكم ‌من ‌بعدي ‌ما ‌يفتح ‌عليكم ‌من ‌بركات ‌الأرض»، ‌ثم ‌ذكر ‌زهرة ‌الدنيا، ‌فبدأ ‌بإحداهما ‌وثنى بالأخرى، فقام رجل فقال: يا رسول الله، أو يأتي الخير بالشر؟ فسكت عنه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، قلنا: يوحى إليه، وسكت الناس كأن على رؤوسهم الطير، ثم إنه مسح عن وجهه الرحضاء، فقال: «أين السائل آنفا، أو خير هو – ثلاثا – إن الخير لا يأتي إلا بالخير، وإنه كل ما ينبت الربيع ما يقتل حبطا أو يلم، إلا آكلة الخضر كلما أكلت، حتى امتلأت خاصرتاها، استقبلت الشمس، فثلطت وبالت ثم رتعت، وإن هذا المال خضرة حلوة، ونعم صاحب المسلم لمن أخذه بحقه فجعله في سبيل الله واليتامى والمساكين، ومن لم يأخذه بحقه فهو كالآكل الذي لا يشبع، ويكون عليه شهيدا يوم القيامة».
