Question

I would like to know if Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and his Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) use to recite the verse:

Minha khalaqnakum wa fiha nu’edukum wa minha nukhrijukum taratan ukhra

at the time of throwing soil on the deceased person?

Please give reference.

Answer

The Fuqaha (Jurists) have mentioned that this is meritorious (mustahab)

(Raddul Muhtar, vol.2 pg.237 & Al-Adhkar, number: 489)

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) is reported to have recited these verses when his daughter Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (radiyallahu’anha) was positioned in her grave.

(Musnad Ahmad, vol.5 pg.254 & As-Sunanul Kubra of Bayhaqi, vol.3 pg.409)

Hafiz Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) has also quoted a narration supporting this in his tafsir.

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Surah: Taha Verse: 55)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
