Is there any reason why people are referred to as “احمر” and “اسود” as in the following Hadith?

بعثت إلى كل أحمر وأسود

 

Answer

This is another version of the narration wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) mentioned his specialities over the other Ambiya. Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded these specific words.

The part in question translates as “I was sent to every red and black person.”

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was making the point that he was sent to the entire humanity, which includes red skinned people, dark skinned people and all other races, regardless of their ethnicity. This is clearly understood from an alternate version of the Hadith recorded in Sahih Bukhari (Hadith: 438) and Sahih Muslim (Hadith: 523), wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “بعثت إلى الناس كافة/أرسلت إلى الخلق كافة” [I have been sent to all of mankind, whereas other Ambiya were sent to their nations exclusively].

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) states that red/red skinned and dark skinned could refer to the following:

1. Red skinned refers to light skinned Non-Arabs and dark skinned refers to ‘Arabs as many ‘Arabs are tan/dark skinned
2. Dark skinned refers to Africans and red skinned refers to all other races, Arabs and non Arabs
3. Red skinned refers to Humans and dark skinned refers to Jinns

These were basically the different usages of these terms by the Arabs in those days.

(٥٢١) – حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، أخبرنا هشيم، عن سيار، عن يزيد الفقير، عن جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أعطيت خمسا لم يعطهن أحد قبلي، كان كل نبي يبعث إلى قومه خاصة، وبعثت إلى كل أحمر وأسود، وأحلت لي الغنائم، ولم تحل لأحد قبلي، وجعلت لي الأرض طيبة طهورا ومسجدا، فأيما رجل أدركته الصلاة صلى حيث كان، ونصرت بالرعب بين يدي مسيرة شهر، وأعطيت الشفاعة».

صحيح البخاري:
(٤٣٨) – حدثنا محمد بن سنان، قال: حدثنا هشيم، قال: حدثنا سيار هو أبو الحكم، قال: حدثنا يزيد الفقير، قال: حدثنا جابر بن عبد الله، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «أعطيت خمسا لم يعطهن أحد من الأنبياء قبلي: نصرت بالرعب مسيرة شهر، وجعلت لي الأرض مسجدا وطهورا، وأيما رجل من أمتي أدركته الصلاة فليصل، وأحلت لي الغنائم، وكان النبي يبعث إلى قومه خاصة، وبعثت إلى الناس كافة، وأعطيت الشفاعة».

المنهاج شرح صحيح مسلم:
(١١٦٣) – قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم وبعثت إلى كل أحمر وأسود وفي الرواية الأخرى إلى الناس كافة قيل المراد بالأحمر البيض من العجم وغيرهم وبالأسود العرب لغلبة السمرة فيهم وغيرهم من السودان وقيل المراد بالأسود السودان وبالأحمر من عداهم من العرب وغيرهم وقيل الأحمر الإنس والأسود الجن والجميع صحيح فقد بعث إلى جميعهم.
