Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“The one who sits in the Masjid, [derives at least one benefit from these three]; Either he meets a Muslim brother from whom he may benefit [in terms of Din], or he hears a word of wisdom, or receives Mercy from Allah [for which every Muslim waits for]”

 

Answer

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith, as part of a longer narration with a weak chain.

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2, pg. 418, Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 2, pg. 22)

The narration is suitable to quote as a means of encouragement to stay in the Masjid, as is the case with Hadiths of this nature.

حدثنا قتيبة، قال: حدثني ابن لهيعة، عن دراج، عن ابن حجيرة، عن أبي هريرة، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم … وقال: «جليس المسجد على ثلاث خصال: أخ مستفاد، أو كلمة محكمة، أو رحمة منتظرة».­­­­­­­­­­

مجمع الزوائد: (٢/ ٢٢)
عن أبي هريرة عن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم  قال: «جليس المسجد على ثلاث خصال: أخ مستفاد، أو كلمة محكمة، أو رحمة منتظرة».
رواه أحمد، وفيه ابن لهيعة وفيه كلام.

الترغيب: (١/ ٢٢٠)
وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «إن للمساجد أوتادا الملائكة جلساؤهم إن غابوا يفتقدوهم وإن مرضوا عادوهم وإن كانوا في حاجة أعانوهم ثم قال جليس المسجد على ثلاث خصال أخ مستفاد أو كلمة حكمة أو رحمة منتظرة».
رواه أحمد من رواية ابن لهيعة ورواه الحاكم من حديث عبد الله بن سلام دون قوله جليس المسجد إلى آخره فإنه ليس في أصلي وقال صحيح على شرطهما.
