Question
What is the source and authenticity of the following narration?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever recites Astaghfirullahal ladhi la ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayh one hundred times, Allah Ta‘ala will forgive his sins, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.”
Answer
Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this reward for a person who recites these words five times.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says: “Whoever says Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladhi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi five times, his sins will be forgiven even they are like the foam of the ocean.”
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 30060. See the authenticity here)
Reciting Istighfar one hundred times daily is established separately. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“O people! Repent to Allah, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2702. See here)
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
