A Statement of Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) Regarding the Status of ‘Ulama

Question

I would like to know the authenticity of the following narration found in the footnotes of Behisti Zewar.

It has been narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) that the status of the ‘Ulama over the masses is more than seven hundred stages, and that the journey from one stage to the other is a distance of five hundred years. (Ihya)

Answer

I have not come across this narration in any primary Hadith source.

Imam Abu Talib Makki, Imam Ghazali (rahimahumallah) and others have cited this narration as a statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma), without a chain of narrators.

Imam Abu Talib Makki (rahimahullah) cited it as Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas’s (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) explanation of the verse:

يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ

“Allah will raise those who believe among you and those who have been given knowledge by degrees/ranks.” (Surah Mujadalah, verse: 11)

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “The ‘Ulama are seven hundred ranks above the general believers, and the distance from one rank to another is a journey of five hundred years.”

(Qutul Qulub, vol. 1, pg. 241, Ihya ‘Ulumid Din, vol. 1, pg. 20)

I could not locate a chain of narrators for this statement and can therefore not verify the authenticity.

Note: Imam Darimi and Imam Hakim (rahimahumallah) have recorded the following statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) regarding the same verse.

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “Allah will raise those who have been given knowledge above the believers who have not been given knowledge by several degrees/ranks.”

(Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 365, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 2, pg. 481)

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) declared this narration authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) concurred.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
