Question

Kindly comment on the authenticity of this Hadith whether is it suitable for practice and how you act on it.

عن أبي بكر الصديق أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا أراد أمرا قال: اللهم خر لي واختر لي

 

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. He has declared the Hadith weak.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3516)

However, this form of istikharah is supported by the practice of Sahabah and is therefore suitable to quote and act upon.

(Refer: Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1557)

You could simply recite the du’a before deciding on a matter or before doing something.

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “When Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) intended doing something he would recite ‘Allahumma khir li wakhtar li’ [O Allah! Make this good for me and choose the better option for me].”

(٣٥١٦) – حدثنا محمد بن بشار قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن عمر بن أبي الوزير قال: حدثنا زنفل بن عبد الله أبو عبد الله، عن ابن أبي مليكة، عن عائشة، عن أبي بكر الصديق، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا أراد أمرا قال: «اللهم خر لي واختر لي»: هذا حديث غريب لا نعرفه إلا من حديث زنفل: وهو ضعيف عند أهل الحديث، ويقال له: زنفل بن عبد الله العرفي، وكان يسكن عرفات، وتفرد بهذا الحديث، ولا يتابع عليه.

سنن ابن ماجه:
(١٥٥٧) – حدثنا محمود بن غيلان قال: حدثنا هاشم بن القاسم قال: حدثنا مبارك بن فضالة قال: حدثني حميد الطويل، عن أنس بن مالك، قال: لما توفي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان بالمدينة رجل يلحد، وآخر يضرح، فقالوا: نستخير ربنا، ونبعث إليهما، فأيهما سبق تركناه، فأرسل إليهما، فسبق صاحب اللحد «فلحدوا للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم».
